Panathenaic Stadium

The Panathenaic stadium is located in the centre of Athens. In the ancient times it was used to host the athletic portion of the Panathenaic Games in honour of Godess Athena. It was fully rebuilt in 1895 in order to host the first modern Olympic Games. The marble stadium was the premier venue for the competitions, and it was reconstructed from the remains of an ancient stadium in Athens, the only major stadium in the world built entirely of white marble. The 2008 Beijing Olympic flame handover ceremony took place there.
